Google Family Link

Google Family Link

Google Family Link is the Android equivalent of Apple's Family Sharing. It is a free app from Google that allows you to remotely control and monitor your child's Android phone, tablet, or Chromebook from your own device (whether you have an iPhone or Android).

Think of it as the "Command Center" for a child's Android device.

1. The Core Features

📱 Screen Time & App Limits

  • Daily Limits: You can set a hard cap (e.g., "3 hours per day"). Once the time is up, the device locks and cannot be used for anything except emergency calls.

  • Bedtime: You set a "Lights Out" time (e.g., 9:00 PM). The phone locks automatically at this time until morning.

  • App Blocking: You can block specific apps entirely. If they try to download Call of Duty or TikTok, you get a notification on your phone asking for approval. You can hit "Deny" instantly.

📍 Location Tracking

  • Real-Time Map: You can see exactly where their device is.

  • Battery Life: Uniquely, it shows you their battery percentage. If they don't answer and say "my phone died," you can check if they are lying.

🛡️ Content Filtering

  • SafeSearch: It forces Google SafeSearch ON, which filters out most pornography and explicit images from search results.

  • YouTube Supervision: This is Google's superpower. You can link their YouTube account to yours and choose between three levels:

    • Explore: (9+) For kids ready to move on from YouTube Kids.

    • Explore More: (13+) A wider range of videos, but still filters out "mature" content.

    • Most of YouTube: Almost everything except age-restricted (18+) content.

⚠️ The "Android vs. iPhone" Warning

This is the most confusing part for parents. Family Link works very differently depending on what phone your child has.

Your Phone

Child's Phone

How it Works

Android or iPhone

Android

Full Control. You can see everything, block apps, and track location.

Android or iPhone

iPhone

Very Limited. You can manage their YouTube/Google settings, but you CANNOT control screen time, block apps, or track the iPhone's location using Family Link. (You must use Apple Family Safety for that).

Rule of Thumb: If your child has an iPhone, use Apple's built-in tools. If they have an Android (Samsung, Pixel, Motorola), use Google Family Link.

🚫 The Blind Spots (What it CAN'T do)

Like Apple, Google Family Link has privacy limits:

  1. No Message Monitoring: You cannot read their texts or WhatsApp messages. You can only see how long they spent on WhatsApp.

  2. Incognito Mode: Family Link automatically disables Incognito Mode in the Chrome browser so they cannot browse secretly. However, if you allow them to download a different browser (like Firefox or DuckDuckGo), they might bypass this.Fix: Block all other browsers in the "App Limits" section so they must use Chrome.

  3. Inside Apps: It cannot see what they are watching on TikTok or who they are chatting with on Roblox. It only controls the access to those apps.

🚀 How to Set It Up (Quick Start)

Step 1: Download the Apps

  • On YOUR phone: Download "Google Family Link" (works on iPhone or Android).

  • On THEIR phone: Go to Settings → Google →Parental Controls. (Newer Androids have it built-in).

Step 2: Link Accounts

  • Open the app on your phone and click "Add Child."It will ask you to sign in with your child's Google Account (Gmail). If they don't have one, it will let you create a "Child Account" (under 13) right there.

  • Tip: Do not use a fake birthday to make them 18+. Use their real age so the legal protections kick in.

Step 3: The "Review" Phase

  • Once linked, the app will show you a list of every app currently installed on their phone.

  • Action: Go down the list and uncheck (block) anything you don't want them to have immediately.
